Johnny Cash appeared on CBS’s The Jackie Gleason Show on January 26, 1957, accompanied by The Tennessee Two. Broadcast live from CBS Studio 50 in New York City, the programme also featured comedian Jonathan Winters. Cash had originally been announced for the January 19 broadcast, but his appearance was postponed until next Saturday, the 26th.

The performance was reportedly intended to begin a series of ten appearances by Cash on Gleason’s programme. The arrangement did not continue, however, and this became his only appearance on the show.

Contemporary newspaper reaction suggests that the performance was not an immediate success with every viewer or critic. A columnist in The Des Moines Register questioned whether Cash’s restrained country style belonged on Gleason’s polished variety programme. A writer in The Memphis Press-Scimitar, however, defended Cash and argued that Gleason had done him no favour by introducing him as a possible new Elvis Presley and predicting an immediate sensation. Cash’s quiet delivery, deep voice and understated stage presence, the writer suggested, required time to make their full impression.

Although the planned series of appearances never materialized, the broadcast remains an important moment in Cash’s early career. It is generally regarded as his first live appearance on a national network television programme and introduced his distinctive sound to a much wider American audience.

Sources disagree about the song Cash performed. Some episode guides identify it as “I Walk the Line,” while the official Johnny Cash website lists “So Doggone Lonesome.” As no complete publicly available recording is currently known, the exact performance remains uncertain.
