The concert was recorded on multitrack tapes but it remained unreleased until 2007, when parts of this concert were released by Mercury as "The Great Lost Performance" (a couple of years before a release titled "Goodnight Asbury Park" was planned but never materialized). The recording was produced by Clark Enslin, a friend of Johnny Cash's; for a while the tapes were lost and after many years of trying to locate the tapes, Clark Enslin visited Johnny at his home in Tennessee to explain to Johnny that the tapes were missing. Johnny was not doing well health wise but expressed strong concern for finding the tapes. Johnny also told Enslin at the time of this recording "It was among my happiest of times."

Guitarist Les Paul was scheduled to perform a song or two with Johnny that night. He became ill and couldn't make it. Along with Les, Lucy Clark was also scheduled to sing. Since the recording was multi tracked (24 separate recording tracks), Johnny told producer Clark Enslin to see about putting Les and Lucy on the recording at a later date. Although Les was unable to make it, Lucy Clark did record two songs as requested by Johnny - "What is Man" and "Forty Shades of Green". Johnny still performed "Vaya Con Dios", the song he had been scheduled to perform with Les and Lucy. He and his band had worked up a special version for them, for that night.
