Compilation produced by Greg Geller.

Originally released as simply "Personal File" but then retitled "Bootleg Volume 1 - Personal File" in February 2011, with the release of "Bootleg 2 - From Memphis To Hollywood". In 2007 a second volume was released as "More Songs From Johnny's Personal File".

The album contains selections from Johnny Cash's 'personal file' - described by Columbia's Steve Berkowitz as Cash's Basement Tapes - a collection of "home recordings" that Cash made in his own studio over the years. The first songs from this 'file' were released on the 2005 compilation "The Legend". They were Down in the Valley and Working on the Railroad.
