This was Cash's first album after leaving Columbia Records, his label for more than two decades. Sessions for "Johnny Cash is Coming to Town" ran from September 1986 till February 1987 during which Cash recorded more than twenty songs. Outtakes includes Steel Guitar Rag, Old McDonald, Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Drinking, Dirty Black Boots, An American Christmas, Whackos and Weirdos (re-recorded in 1989 as A Backstage Pass), Where Did We Go Right, Solid Gone, John Prine's Sam Stone, Kristofferson's The Heart and Anthem '84, Goin' by the Book, Beans for Breakfast, Mystery of Life, Wanted Man and The Hobo Song - the last five were included on the 1991 "Mystery of Life" album.
Cash promoted this album extensively in concert.
