The story behind the archive, the people, the sources, and the community that made it possible.
About This Page
The Johnny Cash Infocenter is an independent, non-commercial research archive built from original research and carefully compiled reference sources. This page outlines the background of the archive, the people behind it, the sources it draws from, and the wider community that helped shape it.
Founded
The Johnny Cash Infocenter was founded in 2007 by Elvira, a lifelong Johnny Cash fan from Groningen, the Netherlands. What began as a personal collection of information gradually grew into an international hub for Cash fans and researchers. Elvira built the site from the ground up and continues to develop and maintain the archive to this day.
A Note on the Archive's History
Over the years, the Johnny Cash Infocenter has published a wide range of material contributed by fans and researchers. The site also expanded to YouTube, where rare audio recordings, television appearances, and interviews reached tens of thousands of subscribers and millions of views.
Some content was lost over time due to server crashes and other technical setbacks. In 2021, the site was briefly relaunched before falling quiet again. Behind the scenes, however, work never stopped. In February 2026, the Infocenter returned with a rebuilt archive featuring nearly 3,000 songs, more than 4,200 live shows, and new features such as On This Day.
The Johnny Cash Infocenter continues to recover and restore material from personal drives and backups. Information that was once part of the site will gradually return as it is verified and reintegrated.
The Team
From its early days, the Infocenter was shaped by a small, dedicated team of fans:
Last Midnight · UnderstoodMan · Cortex · Jeff · Elvira · Ivar
Together they wrote much of the site’s original content, compiled databases, and created a lasting home for Johnny Cash fans and researchers.
Today, the Infocenter is actively maintained by Jeff, Ivar, and Elvira. All three have been closely involved with the archive over the years and continue to shape its development, research, and direction. Elvira oversees the site’s development, technical architecture, content, and research, while Jeff and Ivar remain major contributors to the archive’s content and ongoing research.
Primary Data Sources
Live Shows Database
The Infocenter’s live shows database was originally built by UnderstoodMan and Cortex, with later contributions from Jeff, Ivar, and Elvira. It was the first major Johnny Cash live shows and tour database published online, and it became the original source for concert dates, setlists, and tour information that later spread widely across the internet. Much of what appears elsewhere is derived, directly or indirectly, from this work, although the Johnny Cash Infocenter has not always been credited as the source. The Johnny Cash Infocenter remains the original source and continues to expand and refine this database.
Session & Recording Data
The foundation of the session and recording data is based on the research of J. L. Smith, whose extensive discographic work on Johnny Cash remains an invaluable resource for researchers. Session data was compiled via JazzDiscography.com, which hosts Smith’s research alongside additional contributions from Bear Family Records liner notes. The Infocenter continues to add new information to this body of work.
Troy King & The CASHback Show
A special thank you goes to Troy King, host of the brilliant CASHback Show. A lifelong “Cashaholic” with an encyclopedic knowledge of the Man in Black, Troy took listeners on a weekly musical journey through Cash’s sessions, tours, and mythology. The Johnny Cash Infocenter is deeply grateful to Troy for allowing the archive to host and share his audio broadcasts with its international audience. His passion and deep knowledge remain a valued part of this archive. The CASHback Show will return to the site in a dedicated section.

The Johnny Cash Fanclub
The Infocenter had an association with the Johnny Cash Fanclub in the Netherlands, led by Jan Flederus. Active since 1959, the Fanclub’s collaboration with the Infocenter helped bring Dutch, German, and English-language content to a wider audience.
The Bootleg Forum Community
Much of the early growth of the Infocenter was fueled by the Johnny Cash Bootleg Forum, originally hosted at the RideThisTrain URL before being migrated to the Infocenter. It was a vibrant community of fans, collectors, and traders who shared rare recordings, concert information, and research. Many details in the live shows database originated from discussions and contributions within this community.
If you were part of the Bootleg Forum and would like to reconnect, JCI would love to hear from you. The archive is growing again, and your knowledge and materials remain as valuable now as they were then. Reach out via the contact page.
